Søren Aabye Kierkegaard was a nineteenth century existentialist philosopher, and arguably both the father of existentialism and modern psychology. He is a grossly misunderstood figure, whom some argue was a mystic, an anti-rationalist, or, as is more reasonable, an anti-philosopher. Soren Kierkegaard was a famous Danish philosopher, theologian and religious author. He was well known for his criticism of the philosophies of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling and Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Schlegel. Søren Kierkegaard was born in Copenhagen in 1813 to a wealthy family. His father was Michael Pedersen Kierkegaard, a very religious wool merchant with a conservative sense of existence. His mother was Anne Sorensdatter Lund Kierkegaard, a young servant his father impregnated.

He inherited a melancholy disposition from his father and suffered through an unhappy youth. His frail and slightly twisted Søren Kierkegaard was a 19th-century Danish philosopher who has been labeled by many as the "Father of Existentialism", although there are some in the field who express doubt in labeling him an existentialist to begin with.
